Bed on Bricks

BED ON BRICKS was formed in February 2003 in the boerewors triangle - namely Somerset West, Stellenbosch and Cape Town, South Africa.
It was initiated by former “Sons of Trout” frontman – Mike Hardy - and now comprises of Tim Rankin (drums), Dave van der Linden (guitar), Schalk van der Merwe (bass) and Mike (vocals/sax).

After 4 months of introductions and pleasantries, the band shuffled into the studio to record their first album “Humanarium”.

Extensive touring followed and before long the band notched up slots on most major music festivals around the country. With an ever growing fan-base, ‘bricks’ eagerly cruised back into the studio to record their second album – “If You See Kay”. Having secured support from the likes of Levi’s Original Music and distribution through SMD, Bed on Bricks has created a launching platform which will, no doubt, see them as one of the most promising and exciting new bands that South Africa has yet to offer!

Cape Town Funk-Hopsters Bed on Bricks are back with their long-awaited second album “If you see Kay”. The album was produced by San Fransisco-based ex-pat Patrick Bowsher, recorded at Paris Studios in Fish Hoek, mixed by Dave Langemann at Creative Native productions in Cape Town, and Bowsher at the Film Arts Foundation in San Fransisco respectively, and mastered by Tim Lengfeld in Stellenbosch.

This album quite simply rocks! In an era where South African rock is chronically lacking originality it serves as an example of true local style.

The band consists of veteran rockers Mike Hardy on vocals and saxophone, guitarist Dave van der Linden, bassist Schalk van der Merwe, and drummer Tim Rankin.

The band’s sound is chunky, funky, smooth and rough, with a lot of hop and lyrics free from clichéd, teenage angst ridden, american accented lamentations.

Oh, and its tight, VERY tight!

Quite simply put; the Bricks are a talented bunch and they are a hot band. With plans to tour this country extensively, as well as looking overseas, it won’t be long before you can go out and experience a band that not only sounds good on cd, but delivers one of the hottest live shows in the country at the moment!

With “If you see Kay” the band has gone further down the path that they started on with their critically acclaimed debut album “Humanarium”.

The album is more rounded, the production bigger, and the songs diverse, strong, and very funky. This is a mature album from a band that would rather look around them for inspiration than abroad.
