Mel Miller has been a icon of South African stand-up comedy for 40 years. Unlike rock music or sports where ones best years are associated with youth, the art of stand-up comedy is a lifelong quest for new ideas and skills improvement and comedians usually only get to the top of their craft much later in life.
Miller is one of these artists that have paid his dues and today he is like a good red wine…actually make that a double whiskey, that has matured to a quality that only lots of experience and practice can produce.
Miller is one of those rare breed of comedians, like John Cleese that can have the audience in stitches from the moment they lay eyes on them. He can say more with one slight expression change on that “rubber face” of his than most other comedians can portray in a whole sentence.
Few people that was lucky enough to see the early 80”s TV comedy series of “Biltong and Potroast” will ever forget the likes of Dennis MacLean, Len Davies, Eddie Eckstein, Cyril Green and others who together with Mel Miller produced something that is as yet unmatched on South African comedy television
And this country is a land of milk and honey for comedians as far as material is concerned!! One can only imagine what Miller will have to say about the “huge soap opera that is called “living in South Africa”
