Once again our open night is brimming with talent! Check this out!
Voted best band in South Africa by Mens Health Magazine in 2008, HOT WATER is the brain-child of South African singer-songwriter, composer and guitarist Donovan Copley. The band was formed out of a need to bring together diverse collaborations and place them on a platform under one name. As such the band is a fluid yet consistent mix of dynamic musicians, genres and instruments resulting in an engaging mix of authentic, uplifting songs.
Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Hot Water’s first single“Bushfire” has already found extensive international screening throughout Europe and now in the US. The band was also featured on BBC World, and 5 tracks from their debut album "Home" have been chosen to appear on the international EDEL release 'A Day in Cape Town'.
Donovan says of the band, “Really the main idea is to create that space which allows people to be themselves. A kind of reminder that behind all the activity of this busy world we live in is ”us”, that which is experiencing all this. That’s where I’ve found some sort of peace in amongst all the goings on, and the music serves as an expression for this in my life.” Hot Water has just returned from playing at the Waterpop Festival in Holland. .
"..Hot Water must easily be one of the most exciting music projects to come out of South Africa recently"- THE CITIZEN January 2006
RIPCORD put forward their first performance at the Barley Corn Music Club in 2006 with the idea that "it will be alright on the night". Good motto, although officially, the band started becoming serious in January 2007. Several practices sessions later the band appeared for the second time in Cape Town in March 2007, this time sporting a new lead vocalist by the name of Mel. RipCord has a decidedly rock rhythm section with Joy on drums and Andre on the bass guitar. Balancing the rock aspect is the folky sounds of Jacques on keyboards and the occasional acoustic guitar. Add to that the sweet melodies of Mel and what you have is a tasteful blend of styles, that is RipCord's sound. We call it “FROCK”.
