THE SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION BLUES BAND
(The World’s First Internet Blues Band!)

One of the greatest joys in life for a musician is to get together with other musicians and simply play and create music “on the spot”. In the Blues and Jazz “capitols” of the world like New Orleans, Montreal, Paris & Chicago, certain areas or streetcorners became unofficial gathering places where musicians from all over the world would meet and just ”jam” Often these musicians have never met before and would not even speak the same language, but when they started playing, they all understood each other. This kind of music has a fresh, unrehearsed and “seat of the pants” kind of quality that bristles with energy and joy.
Die Boer theatre retaurant in Durbanville has just created an “official” forum for this kind of music. The “vehicle” is the World’s “First Internet Blues Band!” Read more below about this amazing concept:
THE CONCEPT
the Spontaneous Combustion Blues Band is a collective name for a fast growing number of top South African musicians. The band consists of 3 “frontmen” that will be on either accoustic, electric guitars or keyboards, and a rhytm section consisting of bass and drums. Each “frontman” must bring 6 songs to the gig , and the rules are simple: the band has to be different for each gig and the only rehearsals allowed... is via the internet!!
On stage each “front man” has 1 minute to explain the “essence” of the song to the rest of the band... and to 4 judges in the audience! After that, he must start his song and (“hopefully”) a great “jam” develops. The judges then give a “verdict” on how “succesful” that song was delivered.
Some of the countys best musicians are already on board simply because it IS SO MUCH FUN to do this!! Unlike the “regular” bands they play in where things are well rehearsed and playing becomes almost second nature, in this situation all band-members have to concentrate real hard and use all their skills to firstly stay musically out of trouble, and secondly help create the magic the active “Frontman” is asking you to. Of course there will be plenty of weird scales, bum notes and lots of laughter, but you can also expect some great guitar duels, haunting keyboard work, but above all:...that raw, magical energy that only comes from creating music on the spot!
You are in for an evening of tremendous fun and laughter, but also great, ”different” sounding music. Dont miss!
